Hair Loss in Women after Menopause

 Menopause and female hair loss

Hair loss in women before menopause (peri-menopause), during menopause and following the completion of menopause, is to be expected due to the lowering of estrogen and progesterone levels, and will be clearly visible in 80 percent of all women by the age of sixty.

There are many causes of hair loss in women but one of the most obvious is menopause. As women age, hair thins out and understandably the gradual appearance of a visible scalp can cause embarrassment.

Who knew this is what we had in store for us as we age?

We are not alone. Eighty percent of women have noticeably thinner hair by the time they are 60 years of age.

However female hair loss is not due to one factor as has been widely believed. Women’s magazines and poorly researched articles and blogs as well as scandalous so-called growth shampoo marketers, claim that hair loss is caused by one specific factor. Although they vary in their postulations as to the cause, they mostly suggest that there is one single way to fix it.

According to a recent review published in the International Journal of Women's Dermatology, (G. Fabbrocini, 2018) hair loss in women is polygenic (can be influenced by more than one gene) and multifactorial (dependent on a number of factors) with the additional influence of environmental factors.

So what does this mean for a woman who is noticing hair thinning associated with the timing of menopause?

In my seven years of research around female hair loss, I have concluded that female hair loss is caused by a trigger associated with other contributing factor(s).

This is really a breakthrough for those of us with hair loss in our 50's and beyond. Because it means that potentially we can get some hair density back. I know I have. We don’t have to believe that our hair can no longer look great, just because we’ve come to a certain age.

I have expounded on this in an article here where I have listed out many of the most common causes and fully explained the trigger and contributing factor theory associated with female hair loss.

The menopause connection to hair loss

Hormonal changes and aging change the density of a woman's hair. Menopause brings about a lowering of estrogen and progesterone. These hormones are associated with hair growth and the maintenance of a healthy hair growth cycle.

Once a woman’s estrogen and progesterone levels drop, hair growth begins to slow and more hair enters the resting period and falls. This results in an overall thinning of the hair. In addition, a decrease in these hormones can trigger an increase in the production of a group of male hormones known as androgens.

It is widely believed that these androgens are responsible for female hair loss because it is known to cause hair loss in men. However I have read a few studies that refute this idea or at the very least question the role of androgens in female hair loss. According to (Herskovitz I., 2013) female hair loss may develop in the absence of androgens.

This supports my view that for hair loss to be present in a woman, there must be a trigger combined with contributing factor(s).

You may already be aware of the effect of male hormones if you are seeing hair growth on the face. This can be in the form of a light fuzz on the sides of the face and/or hair growth on the chin.

There is much that can be done to bring back some hair density no matter what age you are. Whether you are recently post menopause or 20-30 years past it.

Read fully this article on the causes and start by working out what may be your trigger and what could be your contributing factors. Then start to work on these over time.

It does take a long time for hair to recover. Mine took eighteen months. But the good news is, while you are working on your hair recovery, you can at least eradicate two major problems with a hair loss concealer like Boost N Blend:

  • Hair loss embarrassment
  • Hair loss caused by the stress caused by hair loss – yes this is known cause, covered in this study

By using a hair loss concealer, you can leave the house with confidence, knowing that absolutely no one is aware of your issue.

"I was having coffee with a friend the other day and she said she was amazed that my hair seemed to be getting thicker with age. She commented that she thought it usually went the other way. I just smiled and said nothing! Thanks Boost N Blend™" - June, WA

The big kicker however is hair loss stress causing hair loss. You can read the full story here of one woman’s amazing recovery once she realised that stress was a contributing factor for her.

The stress of hair loss grips us all. If you use a concealer, then the stress is massively reduced because one of the major causes of this hair loss stress, is the visibility of it, our scalp showing, and knowing that others can see it.
