Top Tricks to Boost Your Hair Volume
Do you dream of luscious thick locks? Most women do!
Unfortunately, most women with fine or thinning hair, know that the dream of boosting your hair volume rarely becomes a reality without a lot of hard work! We've compiled a list of top tips and tricks to help boost your hair volume and create the appearance of thicker, fuller locks for - all without damaging your hair in the process!
We've also done some added research to help explain why traditional volumizing products may actually be damaging fine hair further and which products actually will work to protect and boost volume while being kind to your hair.
1. Start with a Volume Boosting Shampoo
It seems logical to start at the beginning with a specifically formulated Volume Boosting Shampoo and Conditioner but so many women underestimate the importance of this step. Traditional volumising products often 'work' by stripping the hair of moisture and making it more frizzy to create the illusion of added volume (we've previously discussed that here) but that's simply the worst thing you can do to fine, thin and thinning hair!
The damage caused by cheap, traditional volumising shampoos and conditioners often requires corrective intervention to treat and reseal the hair follicles. That really is the first port of call when trying to achieve added hair volume so that you start with a good, healthy foundation.
Women sometimes believe that nourishing shampoos will only serve to weigh hair down or make it oily but the great news is that modern research and understanding have resulted in kind-to-hair product formulations like Boost & Be Shampoos and Conditioners which are designed to help volumise your hair from root to tip without weighing it down! As you work towards full hair healing and follicle restoration, you may also wish to try a specifically tailored hair repair mask to speed up the process.
2. Use a Root Boosting Spray
A high-quality, kind-to-hair root boosting spray literally gets to the 'root' of your hair problems. These types of sprays give your hair structure and support for added oomph. They also assist the process of manually creating volume near the roots through one of the other methods listed below.
Boost & Be Volume Boost Liquid Mousse is more than a traditional spray though; it's a light, spray-like liquid mousse that has all the staying power of a traditional mousse without the stickiness, glugginess and weight you'd usually experience. This product is specifically designed for women with fine, thin and thinning hair, so it won't weigh down your hair.
PRO TIP: Root-boosters won't work once the hair is dried so always apply to towel dried hair for maximum effect.
3. Blow Dry your Hair Upside Down
Want to feel like you've just had a professional blow dry? Add volume and body simply by flipping the script - literally! Tip your head upside down and blow dry it working your way from the nape of your neck down towards your roots in stages. In the process of drying your hair like this, your roots will automatically lift off your scalp - which is exactly how you want them to dry. Take this strategy to the next level by spritzing in some Boost & Be Volume Boost Liquid Mousse first too.
PRO TIP: Use this method to get your hair 80-90% dry and then use a round brush the right way up just smooth the final flyaways for a stylish finishing touch!
4. Change your Part
Some women are super adventurous with their hair - different style, different cut and every shade of different colour imaginable. Generally, these women are the exception to the rule though and the majority of women stick to the same style, colour, and beloved hair stylist for years (if not decades!) There's absolutely nothing wrong with that either; especially if you've found a style and colour that suits your face and makes you feel confident, but a subtle change every now and then CAN make a huge difference.
We're not even suggesting a new cut or colour... believe it or not, something as simple as changing your part can give you a much fresher look and tonnes more volume - totally free of charge!
You'll most likely have a favourite place to part your hair because it naturally falls in a certain way (generally somewhere in the middle or off-centre to the side). Unfortunately, this can also be the spot where your hair lies the most flat and keeping the same part long-term, simply trains your hair to stay that way.
Try flipping your part to the other side or playing with a zig-zag part. This will create added, instant volume at the crown. It may feel slightly awkward for a while though as you retrain yourself and your hair - but it will be well-worth it.
To get started, try positioning your new part while your hair is still slightly damp. Spray a volume boosting mist or liquid mousse onto the roots of your towel dried hair. Use a round brush and hair dryer in an upwards motion from your roots as you lift the roots away from your scalp. A good quality volume boosting product can be sprayed right from the roots to the tips of your hair in order to provide added volume and fullness throughout.
5. Lightly Back-Brush it
Throw out your fears of old-school teasing! We don't want you to aggressively back-comb your hair with a fine-toothed comb just to create a huge mess of massive tangles... that's a sure fire way to damage your hair and cause breakage. Instead, you should take a more modern approach by gently back brushing your hair at the roots with a large paddle brush which simply helps to create some added volume where you need it most and won't result in knotty, matted hair.
One way to disguise the back-brushed areas is to gently separate the top layer of your hair with a pintail styling comb (or your fingers if you don't have one). Start working through your hair, section by section, gently pulling it taut and away from your head. Make 3-4 firm strokes with your brush towards your scalp and gently spritz the hair you've just combed with some light hairspray. Using a brush instead of a fine toothed comb will ensure that the hair doesn't knot or tangle but simply adds some well-placed volume. Once you've completed all the sections, release the pinned top layer and gently style into place leaving the appearance of smooth hair.
Is that all?
No - it really isn't! We have plenty of other great tips coming your way in our next instalment on this topic - we just didn't want to bombard you with too much information all at once. Stay tuned and let us know how you go with Steps 1 - 5 till next time!
